Overview

Matthew is a principal in Cohen and Wolf's Business & Corporate, Real Estate, and Commercial Finance Groups.

Matthew is a seasoned transactional attorney whose practice focuses primarily on commercial finance and real estate matters.

As counsel to financial institutions and borrowers in commercial lending transactions, Matthew often advises his clients on deal structure and helps quarterback the lending process from term sheet to closing. Over more than 35 years of practice, he has helped structure traditional and non-conventional financing transactions for both lenders and business owners, including the full range of asset-based and real estate secured loans, both direct and syndicated, with complex collateral structures.

A significant portion of Matthew’s practice is the representation of commercial real estate developers and other property owners. Whether advising his clients in acquiring or selling real estate, negotiating leases on behalf of landlord or tenant clients, or helping them close mortgage loan transactions, Matthew understands that each client is unique. He helps them realize their goals by understanding their business and priorities, and helps position each client to successfully gain strategic advantages in completing their transactions.

Matthew is actively involved in advising small business entities and individuals in matters concerning choice of entity, business formation and succession issues, and asset and stock purchases and sales. He also represents non-profit economic development corporations with respect to real estate development projects.

Throughout his career, Matthew has been actively involved in supporting cultural and civic organizations in his community. He serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of both New Haven’s Shubert Theater and Goodwill of Southern Connecticut, and serves as a board member of WSHU Public Radio. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section of the Connecticut Bar Association, and is a member of the CBA’s Commercial Finance Section. He previously served on the boards of the New Haven Arts Council and the New Haven Ballet, and served as the Hamden, Connecticut representative to the Board of Directors of the South Central Connecticut Regional Economic Development Corporation.
